JONATHAN CHO ABOUT

INCREMENTAL CHARACTERS
Tangut script is a writing system used in the ancient Xi Xia empire which existed from 1038 to 1227. The language has an incremental structure which different characters are created by combining two or three components. Such similar components are combined together in different combinations to make different characters which makes the Tangut script one of the most confusing scripts to learn.

Many valuable and historically significant Buddhist books and sutras were written in Tangut script. I was inspired by the structure of the Tangut script and the Buddhist mantras and the richness of the Buddhist and Hindu imagery.
